SHA-256 and SHA-512 hash generator

Calculate SHA-256 and SHA-512 text digests locally with the Web Crypto API. Hashes are one-way fingerprints, not encryption.

Which hash should you choose?

Use the algorithm required by the system you need to interoperate with. SHA-256 and SHA-512 both produce fixed-length digests, but the outputs are different and are not interchangeable.

What a hash can and cannot tell you

A matching digest can help check that text has not changed. A plain hash does not prove who created the text, encrypt it, or keep it secret. For authentication, use an HMAC or a signature; never store passwords with a fast general-purpose hash.

Each tool calculates the digest in this browser. Read how local processing works.
