Try a small example

Load the fictional example in a cleared form. Check the options, run the tool if needed, and compare the result below.

Read locale-aware word and sentence estimates, paragraph and line totals, and visible character and UTF-16 code-unit counts. Paste text and select Count text. Words and sentences use the browser’s locale-aware text segmentation when available. Paragraphs are groups of non-empty lines separated by a blank line. A final line break ends the last line but does not add another empty line to the line count. Character totals include spaces and line breaks; grapheme clusters and UTF-16 code units are shown separately because tools and text limits may count them differently. Word and sentence boundaries depend on language and punctuation. Older browsers use simpler fallback estimates; mixed-language text and abbreviations may need a manual check.

Quick answer

Read locale-aware word and sentence estimates, paragraph and line totals, and visible character and UTF-16 code-unit counts.

The page and its assets load from the site; this operation uses your entered values only in this browser and does not send them to a calculation endpoint.

How to use it

Paste text and select Count text. Words and sentences use the browser’s locale-aware text segmentation when available. Paragraphs are groups of non-empty lines separated by a blank line. A final line break ends the last line but does not add another empty line to the line count. Character totals include spaces and line breaks; grapheme clusters and UTF-16 code units are shown separately because tools and text limits may count them differently.

Limits

Word and sentence boundaries depend on language and punctuation. Older browsers use simpler fallback estimates; mixed-language text and abbreviations may need a manual check.

Frequently asked questions

How are words and sentences counted?

Supported browsers use locale-aware segmentation for word and sentence boundaries; older browsers use simpler estimates. Abbreviations, punctuation and mixed-language text can still change the result.

Why do visible characters differ from UTF-16 code units?

A combined character such as an emoji may display as one grapheme while occupying multiple UTF-16 code units. Spaces and line breaks are included in both character totals; some services instead count bytes.

What counts as a paragraph or line?

A paragraph is a group of non-empty lines separated by a blank line. Blank input has 0 lines; a final line break ends the preceding line and does not add an extra line.
