Image Compressor and Resizer

Resize and compress a still image locally, then compare its dimensions and file size.

Try a fictional file

Reduce image dimensions or change encoding.

These small practice files are generated locally from fictional data. Download one, then select it yourself in the existing tool. Nothing is selected, run, cleared or replaced automatically. Processing stays in your browser; loading this page and its practice files still requests site assets.

Download practice file (sample.png)

What to do

Select sample.png. Set maximum width to 160 and height to 100, preserve proportions, and choose PNG. Run and download.

How to read the result

Expect 160 × 100 pixels. PNG ignores quality; JPEG/WebP can lose detail. File size may increase. Verify dimensions, format and appearance in the saved file.

Keep your original. Open the downloaded result and check it before sharing. If your browser cannot process this format, use this walkthrough; no result is guaranteed.

Quick answer

Resize a still image and export it as PNG, JPEG, or WebP. Review the original and resulting pixel dimensions and file sizes before downloading.

The page and its assets load from the site; this operation uses your entered values only in this browser and does not send them to a calculation endpoint.

How to use it

Select a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or GIF image. Optionally enter maximum dimensions; with Keep aspect ratio on, those dimensions form a bounding box. Choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP and quality, then compare actual input/output sizes. GIF animation is reduced to a still frame; JPEG uses a white background.

Limits

Input is limited to 20 MB; the decoded image to 80 megapixels and 20,000 pixels per side; output to 20 megapixels and 8,000 pixels per side. Animated GIFs become still images. JPEG uses a white background and does not preserve transparency; PNG ignores the quality slider. Browser format support can change the actual output format.

Frequently asked questions

Is the selected image uploaded?

The browser decodes the selected image and creates the output locally. The page and its assets still load from the site, but the image file is not uploaded by this tool.

Does the tool preserve animated GIFs?

No. The image is decoded as a still image; animation is not preserved.

What happens to transparency?

PNG and WebP can preserve transparency when supported. JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas are placed on a white background.

Why might the output be larger?

Dimensions, image content, and output format affect file size. Lossless PNG or a format change may produce a larger file; the actual result size is shown.
